OnDeck Outdoor Space Builder - Deck Professionals - Blog about Cable Rail System Options, Pros and Cons.
We are often asked, “What do you think of cable rails?”.
It’s a very subjective question and has multiple answers. First, do they violate any codes? Well the only code I can apply that would encompass most townships is the international residential code which, by my research, had a problem with them in 2009 but seems to accept them now, however, that does not stop a state or local municipality from writing codes that forbid them. You need to check with local codes to see if they have made any amendments to their building code and which version of the IRC they base their standards on.
Do I like the way they look? Yes, if they are installed properly they are pretty sharp. I’ve seen custom installs and prepackaged installs that look great if high-grade cables and parts are used.
Are they functional? Yes, when spaced less than 4” apart they work great.
Can a toddler climb them? Yes, it’s my opinion that a cable rail is easier to scale than a standard 3’ vertical baluster rail. Westbury makes a vertical cable system that eliminates this hazard called Vericable.
Do they rust? If you use poor quality hardware or cables you can bet on it. That is why we use prepackaged systems like Feeney. The hardware is smaller, and the product comes with a warranty, so we don’t worry about the grade of materials when we get them because the whole system comes kitted. Furthermore, I like the smaller hardware, it looks better.
Lots of installers will not install cable rail because they don’t have experience with it or they are afraid of liability. Homeowners need to be conscious of the hazards associated with them. Be sure to ask what grade material you are getting and if the material has a warranty against rust and deterioration and always be sure the installer is qualified to install the product, or the warranty will be voided.
